Tablet pc's and touchscreens
-
Without hijacking the tablet thread, I have a question about the new Tablet pc's and touch screen laptops.
Touchscreens have been around for yonks, but now it's available to the average Joe, in laptop form. Do they work with all the same apps that a usb tablet works? Has anyone got one and using it as a 'Art' tool?
The reason is I'm on the verge of deciding if I should get the 21" Cintiq or if a tablet / touchscreen laptop may have more to offer. They are by far cheaper, and totally stand alone.

It really depends on what you want to do with it!
I have a Cintiq 21UX but do not use for SketchUp. It
just does not work as well as a good mouse, for me
at any rate. The Cintiq is good for doodling and art work, however
the slight delay can be annoying when doodling as this
is normally a fast working process.I have only tried out a touchscreen laptop and found the
same delay thing annoying. Not many have decent resolution
but there are a few. From memory 1400x1050 was the best
I could find in this area, Toshiba M200.You might have a look at this product,

It looks interesting but I didn't see a price so maybe
not available. Here is a good rundown on tablet laptops,

Thanks for your reply Mike, I have sent an email with the hope they reply with price and availability.
My primary use is sketching, cartooning. I would need a quick response as my draw style is fast with light grey and then accurate with felt pen.

personally i much prefer a tablet, to me it feels more elegeant and less bulky than a tablet laptop. I've always found that tablet laptops are to cumbersome to really be of any use, but then i've never really made a concerted effort to get used to them.
Hope that helps to an extent.

I use to use a tablet laptop before I got my MacBook Pro. I used it to draw, but ultimately I didn't use it for much, hence when I needed to upgrade my portable I got a Mac.
As for the usefulness of a tablet pc, that depends on what you'll use it for. If you draw, it would be great. There are some great art tools out there (Artrage is a great app). But if you plan on using it for 3D, I don't think it's very useful. I use the keyboard a lot and the tablet ergonomics didn't work well with pen to screen + keyboard strikes. Folding the pc to just have the screen showing + hooking up a keyboard did work but it's kind of awkward, though that's your best bet.
You should ask yourself if you really need to tablet functionality, i.e., would you go out and draw with it in the park? In my case I didn't need it as much as I wanted. This comes from a person that uses the Wacom Inuos 3 on my desktop for EVERYTHING. My mouse sees very little action. I even hook it up to my MacBook, because I have a hard time using SketchUp with a mouse now. For the money I'd say get a great laptop. Tablet PC's are still pretty pricey.
