      Gerrit Rietveld armchairs.png
Gerrit Reitveld, one of the most important designers of the 20th Century, created this pair of armchairs for a jewelry store in The Hague in 1963. (He is also responsible for the iconic red-blue chair that defined the esthetic movement known as de Stijl.) I saw the originals on the 1stidbs.com web site and modeled them yesterday. They are definitely not for lounging. And I guess you only need one arm to qualify as an armchair.

Structurally, this raises so many questions. I would use this as an example of how not to built seats.

Nice work, David. I doodled those chairs out over the weekend too. I also thought they need cushions but then they seem like chairs that aren't designed for long term sitting.

I expect that these chairs are better built than they appear considering they've survived around 50 years already. They are more heavily built than his Red and Blue chairs and there are originals of those still around. There are many examples of these chairs as well.

            Thanks, Dave and Joe,
The chairs do look unstable, but I'll bet they actually prove to be pretty solid and stable. Not that I want to try anytime soon.
