3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Zoom Behavior
-
Hello, I just recently acquired a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse specifically for use with SketchUp. So far, the SpaceMouse has fulfilled all of my expectations, with one exception. With my Logitech mouse in SketchUp, I could position (select) a point of interest and when I scrolled the wheel to zoom, the zoom, either in or out, would focus on the selected object or point. With the SpaceMouse, that does not appear to be the case. After clicking on a point with my mouse and using the SpaceMouse to zoom, the zoom seems to have a mind of its own. The focus disappears off of my screen or flys off elsewhere. The results are definitely not the same as those resulting from scrolling the Logitech mouse's wheel. Has anyone else noticed this difference? If so, is this behavior the result of some setting, or combination thereof, in SketchUp, 3DXWare, or the SketchUp driver? BTW, I do not believe my use of the SpaceMouse is causing the zoom to have a rotational component. Thanks.

You can take advantage of the 3Dconnexion Fast Zoom or Zoom to Cursor option by holding the middle mouse button down while moving the 3Dconnexion cap back and forth.

Thanks, gregw. Works like a charm. Is there some documentation describing this or other combinations?

gregw, Sorry for the bother. I just discovered that the Viewer is the avenue to getting the documentation. Unfortunately, it failed to load on my machine even with several attempts to fix the installation. Each time it generates a 1603 Error. I've had an e-mail request for support in to 3dConnexion for over a week now with no response. Calling them now. Regardless, thanks again for answering my question.

The documentation should have been installed when you loaded the 3Dconnection drivers. On my windows computer it's in the start menu under 3Dconnexion > Documentation.
For what it's worth here's a few things that work well for me using the spacemouse with Sketchup:
Assign one of the buttons to "Rotation On/Off" so then you don't have to hold the middle mouse button down to lock the rotation.
Make a template file with the camera set to parallel projection and with scene tabs setup with the standard views so you can easily zoom and pan in any desired 2D orientation by selecting the scene and then using the assigned button to lock the rotation.
The spacemouse also works great with adobe acrobat. I use a dual monitor setup and I normally have reference info in pdf format on one screen. I set the left button on the spacemouse to lock and unlock the zoom in the 3Dconnexion Acrobat settings when I select the acrobat screen.
