It is amazing, I recommend watching people's reactions and reviews on YouTube, iv even listened to a guy who was on a beach in a game and he felt so relaxed and being there tru the VR headset that he felt as tho he should crack open a beer and enjoy the view, gameplay with the oculus is the future of gaming but I see this as a great tool for modelling in sketchup, also I am aware that developers are already developing projects using the oculus rift with the leap, kinect, 360 degree treadmills and gloves where u can pick up and interact with objects, the developments are already shooting up on the web, some guy already made a superman simulation where you use you head to stear, now that's something I'd like to try for myself.

Ah well I just placed my order, I'm interested in this type of tech and am very willing to learn what can be done with it, maybe even use it for modelling in sketchup, oculus say I should have it within a month, if all goes well, and if this beauty is as good as the reviews iv seen I'd like to see if there can be any integration into sketchup itself, but it's just the developers kit so who knows, but yeah I'm a VR freak so ill keep ye all up to date on how I get in with it in the coming month, I hope

Thanks for posting this. For modeling, this kind of stuff can't happen soon enough. Gloves and goggles now, and further on down the road--who knows? -
I strongly believe in VR also, it works with game engines such as cryengine, udk and unity, unity is idea for sketchup models as it's a tri mesh based game engine, so we can virtually walk around and inside buildings that we create in sketchup, but yes I would like to be able to use the oculus inside sketchup itself for modelling purposes, gloves are already being worked on for the oculus by I dependant developers, it's only a matter of time, also bare in mind the oculus is also 3d, so u can see depth as you would with the naked eye, I'm looking forward to testing this out but I can't see it work in sketchup just yet but it would be great to see this happen at some stage, which I don't think will be too long

Aren't automotive manufacturers already using this process for design, etc?

I'm sure they are, I believe NASA are also testing out the oculus also as it's better than what they developed for their own needs, oculus rift seems to be taking the lead very quickly, and I'm sure once the consumer version that follows will be second to non, Im guessing we will all have at least 1 of these in our homes by next yr

I am really looking forward to this coming down to the consumer level price-wise. It would add a whole 'nuther level to modeling and gaming. Hope it happens, I can say I'd buy it instantly.

Considering the price of the developers kid it is quite low, you can ha e your developers kit for $300, which is very low considering I payed nearly €600 on a early VR headset a couple of yrs bk that I felt like smashing with a hammer on many occasions, I know it's crazy but iv being a VR fanatic since the lawnmore man movie all those yrs ago

Me too. If you could get a VR headset for the comparable price and resolution of a high quality LCD, I'd be all over it. My LCD was $600, so to pay that for a VR headset would be OK.

Ok this is a video well worth checking out, you need to watch it in full tho, imagine you are taking a virtual tour of a modelled house and you want to interact with it, like windows, doors and furniture, check it out

I know we need to use a game engine to interact with our models in a realistic way like in the above clip, and unity being the ideal engine as it prefers tris over quads, in fact unity does the same as sketchup does when importing a quad model, it converts every quad into tris, but wouldn't it be great if like on the above clip we could interact with our models in SU, even model in that environment, sculpt using our hands, pull or push surfaces, verts into position, the oculus rift developers kit has only being shipped out in the last 2 wks and already there are hundreds of videos from developers poping up on the web and all are unique ideas and what makes it even better is the fact that most of what's being developed have being made open source.

Ok, took a while to get the Oculus rift but I received it about 3wks ago, and I tell you this is a serious piece of kit.
At first I taught maybe the low Rez would take away from it but was I wrong, you really get the sensation that you have been teleported somewhere else when wearing the rift, there are already a huge variety of demos to test out on this device and my only description is "amazing".
I've watched dinosaurs walk past, taken a spacewalk in a EVA suit at the ISS, drove a Scania truck across Europe, sky dived, etc etc... And all experiences felt real in the rift.
Where do I see this going in relation to SU? Well I think it will benefit model development in SU, been able to look around your creations in 3D and build models would benefit modellers more, head movement can be used to navigate around your model as you create would make it more natural, seen depth would also feel more natural, I've seen on the Oculus forums that developers are already discussing how best to integrate this device into Maya, 3D Max and so on, they like myself see potential here, I also see that that oculus team are already testing and show casing the HD version of the rift, it really is the future, if anyone her had ever played skyrim and amazed as I was of the detail and vast landscape, well you should see it in the rift, feels like your actual there in that environment. -

iichiversii, I'm looking forward to trying out the Oculus Rift VR when you are in our neck of the woods! I think I may need to be sitting down while using as the last time I tried out such I device in Vail CO I got a bit dizzy ..... then again it was late and I had a good few drinks in

I often be in ennis, ill bring it next time and you can try it out, it does cause some motion sickness but over time you become used to it
