Thanks to SketchUp and now finally making the move to Layout I have no desire nor need to buy this massive attack on my wallet. $5,245.00? I mean who the hell do they think they are?

Automatically attach property set definitions to architectural objects and complete quantity takeoff calculations more easily and quickly. Enjoy a more efficient workflow with new command line search features now extended to architecture styles, allowing you to add existing styles to your drawing more quickly. Resume work more quickly in the event of a corrupted file with new project information file backup features that restore files to their up-to-date copies. Reduce the likelihood of errors with new display capabilities for layers that allow you to order layers in a list, apply the display order for objects in each layer, and preview changes. Clean up drawings and move unused layers more efficiently by creating a layer zero with a single click. Increase the fluidity of your design process with new block swap features that help you to make changes to your components more easily as your design changes. Streamline door and window placement with new door enhancements that enable you to add doors or windows to a wall by restoring the previous option. I'm pretty sure SU/LO covers most of those bases and it's a lot more fun.

Kristoff, I never could understand why the architectural industry in general would spend so mucch money on Autodesk products, since there are cheaper programs out there. I can only figure Autodesk convinced everyone that Autocad is the "must have" program (the "Graphic Standards" of CAD...but don't get me started on Graphics Standard).

$5245?
-
I've always believed it was because they did not want or care to have the business of small time architects because they knew they would get every large firm and stick it in their ribs.
-
What's more I'm fairly certain SketchUp and anyone else has to pay them to use the .DWG file type for imports. Which of course is the industry standard file type.
-
I'm not sure about that, Kristoff. It would appear the non-profit Open Design Alliance has developed a platform for use by it's members to develop DWG files.
Interestingly, Autodesk was unsuccessful in trying to trademark the DWG file extension. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled "DWG is merely descriptive of applicant’s goods under Section 2(e)(1) of the Trademark Act for two reasons: (1) DWG is a recognized abbreviation for “drawing," and (2) .dwg is a file format used for computer-aided design (CAD) drawings made both with applicant’s CAD software and others’ CAD software." It would seem their successs in permeating the market to the point their file format was ubiquitous worked against them in this case.
Also, I wonder if the DWG format was "owned" by one company (Autodesk) while so widely used in the industry, if they wouldn't have trouble with antitrust laws.

I've been drafting in CAD since like R-10... I always assumed it was theirs and trademarked. I guess I lived the addage "When you assume"... Thanks for the enlightenment.
