I have been down in the shop shaping a surfboard and thought that I should share this adventure.
I had always promised to get my daughter a surfboard, really I had! Well when she reminded me AGAIN and challenged me to make one that was not a challenge I could let go. My Sketchup skills had not progressed very far, so I tried to draw one with out much luck, but I found a surfboard on the warehouse that I could easily use. My plan all along was to have the CNC at work cut out the pieces, so I made a concept drawing for the CNC engineer at work so he could play with it and we could see if he could open it in Rhino, as that is the software he was learning to draw in. He was able to take it and run with it. As a matter a fact he finished it by making the internal cavities and then breaking it apart. Well there was no need for me to finish the drawing in Sketchup, so he tool pathed the Rhino drawing in Alpha Cam and we made lots of sawdust on the CNC one Saturday. Using western red cedar and ash a blank was made, much to the delight of my daughter. I hand planed it to shape very easily. Sanding and finishing are all that's left and we will be surfing this summer.
I need to thank all the great people on this site that so freely help and write great plugins. I cannot tell you how many times I have started to write a question on a problem i am having only to read a bit more and find a solution. It has allowed me to take on my next great adventure a wooden bike!

        Cool result β˜€
Are you sure this surf is floating "over" the sea?
And not "middle over" the sea?

The woods are Western red cedar and ash. Some of the cedar was amazingly light weight. Most of my work has been with hardwoods. As a matter of fact I cannot remember the last time I worked with softwoods. I do a lot of hand planing but I have to adjust to holding the plane differently to get fair curves. This has been lots of fun both drawing and building.

You should find yourself a good compass plane.

I have a compass plane but i find them best if the the curve is only in one plane. The surfboard is always 2 curves so a compass plane would not work. Holding a plane at an angle with only a small area in contact with the board works well, just different from all my planing trying to make a surface flat.
