I received a .tin format from an INCREDIBLY difficult client. They are completely unwilling to try to export it in some format that is useful to me. I just need topo lines.

Anyone out there know how to take a civil3d .tin and get topo lines out of it? I do not own civil 3d. (And to make things worse, I think they are running bentley Microstation, so this is an export from their file to a .tin I think?).

Anyhow, any help would be appreciated if anyone knows some tool to read and convert .tin files. Thanks

      Chris

I never mentioned the end goal is to get topo lines I can use in autocad.

Another thought, I do have ArcGIS and that was what I was originally hoping I would be able to open the TIN file into and then work with it there to extract topo lines and then export to cad.

Any chance something like Meshlab could convert it?

That's a good suggestion. Looking at their site though, they do not appear to support .tin format. Thanks though!

              Chris:
I didn't chase this down but a google search suggestion was "civil 3d export tin" just like that and got a bunch of links appearing to be Autodesk forums with related questions. You probably already looked at these.

Chris, can you send me the file? I can convert it to ACAD tomorrow morning.

Wait, you said it's a *.TIN file? I've never heard of that. I'm still willing to try to convert it for you, but they may have done something strange if they exported out of Microstation(?) first. Always something new to learn about Civil.

Thanks for the offer Wyatt. I finally downloaded the trial of civil 3d and they had a pointcloud file I formatted to x,y,z format and civil 3d read that in just fine and gave me my dearly needed contours. Civil3d does seem to support .tin files. But it did not like the one I was given, that's for sure!

I've been meaning to ask you about civil3d though. You use regularly for Landscape work right? I'm curious about that. Maybe I'll email you or catch you online tomrrow.

Glad you got it to work. I use Civil for site planning work, yes. It's a beast. That's both good and bad. I'd be happy to talk to you about it more if you have specific questions.
