UK government plans web monitoring

The UK government wants to know who calls/writes/texts/tweets with who, and how frequently. The reason given is "to catch terrorists".
I heard about this in "The News Quiz", a comedy radio show from BBC Radio 4. Host Sandi Toksvig said jokingly: "If you want to let the government know how you feel about this, write an email to... well, anybody!"
What do you think of this? Is your country doing something similar?
Right now, in Ecuador, the government is forcing everyone to link their cell phone numbers to their personal information (ID number, full name), or else you won't be able to make calls. I thought that was a terrible invasion to privacy, but seeing what the UK government is planning to do, now it looks like nothing.

Yep! Looks like Big Brother is doing his thing.
Read this http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/anonymous-hacks-uk-government-sites-over-draconian-surveillance/11412 and see that Anonymous didn't like what was proposed so they brought down (for a while), the Uk's Home Office, 10 Downing Street - British Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Justice by overloading the system.
The proposal is,
"The UK government is proposing a law that would require phone and Internet companies to store information on all communications, and hand it to the security services when required. The Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP) abandoned by the last government is back on the table, proposed as a means to increase security, and likely to be pushed through before the Olympics in London, according to reports."
Now I'm all for keeping tracks on terrorists etc but I very much doubt that one terrorist will write a plain text email to another!
I don't like the idea that my private and confidential email and texts would be stored for examination by anyone.

..... then again. The UK Gov plans simply wont work IMO because whatever they come up with will probably be challenged and taken apart by hackers!
