Layers from materials
-
Anyone know of a Ruby that will create a layer for each material used in the model and put all objects using that material on that layer?
Thanks in advance!

There is a plugin that explodes all groups/components and then re-groups the model by material:
http://www.smustard.com/script/GroupByTexture
This is not putting things on different layers by material but that would be dangerous anyway as without grouping, loose geometry on different layers would still merge and you could not really do anything with it.What exactly do you need this feature for?

Well that would at least speed up the process of doing it manually.
I'm fooling around with exporting models to 3DS...I'm basically just experimenting currently, but I'm trying to bring my render times down so I'm trying other methods and programs.

Well, according to the plugin description, it is particularly for exporting.
I guess it would not be hard to write a plugin to layer a model by material but as I said above, it could cause problems. Maybe after grouping by material, it could be layered by these groups (but that will definitely not be me who can write such a plugin)

Hi,
This one http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=219 will do exactly what you are after (and more).

Thanks Didier! (Sorry for the delayed response...spring break
