      Anyone using it?

I downloaded the preview version (I guess they do not like the word "beta") Seems pretty cool (on a laptop) and fast.

Getting used to not having a start button will take some time, still trying to figure out where the heck to initiate my apps from.

Although I use a Mac, I usually have a Windows 7 VM running under Parallels for a couple of programs that are Windows only so I thought I would give the Preview edition a whirl.

I have to say I absolutely hated it from the start. Like OS X Lion, they are trying to bring a mobile interface to the desktop and for me at least, it doesn't work. I am happy using my iPhone or iPad but I do NOT want my desktop to emulate them in any way. Share data yes - but that's it. As Mountain Lion seems destined to take this further on the Mac, I can see myself ending up with Linux.

I like it actually, having the choice of two ways to use it, I amusing the PC IU not the Metro part, just I'd really like the start button back as I always pin my apps that I use often in my start menu and never as desktop shortcuts.

I'm interested to try it although I have my reservations. Based on the previews I've seen it looks like the new Xbox interface mimics it and I don't very much like that at this point. But I can understand why microsoft would want a consistent UI between all the platforms.

I've actually still got Vista on my machine at home. If I download the Win 8 'consumer preview' will I be able to use it forever or is there some sort of time limit on it?

I doubt it, I believe you my be able to upgrade to full version at a price once it's released.

Make sure to back up before installing, in case you need to go back if you do not like it, in Windows 7 just create a full restore point and save to usb or anything external.

I have windows 8 installed some weeks ago on a virtual machine (VMWare). The desktop is now accessible by using a tile. I don't like the start menu and I am still not clear how I can arrange my programs. At the moment I do not know yet what could induce me to switch to Windows 8.

I think it makes a big difference whether they try to force the same interface on different devices or the same unified OS (underlaying frameworks ad applications) with an adapted interface (tablet, desktop, tv interface).
