MAC: rename extension .zip to .rbz

I have tested this with 2 different MAC people.
I have provided them with a zipped ruby file and another file that was zipped but already renamed with a .rbz extension.
I asked them to rename the file with the .zip extension to have a .rbz extension.
They each did that with no problem at all. However the little icon to the left of the file name still looked like the icon for zip files and did not change to the same icon that the .rbz file had associated with it.From within SketchUp under Preferences>Extensions clicking on Install Extension and navigating to those files shows the renamed file grayed out. There is no way to access it even though the it is clearly renamed and visible as a .rbz file.
The file which I had provided as .rbz was fine and accessible and it got installed fine. That had just been renamed on my Windows system in exactly the same fashion as I had asked these MAC guys to do.Any body have any advice?

I tried this on my Mac with my own files. The icon of the zipped file I renamed with an rbz extension became the generic unix executable file icon. In Sketchup, this file was not greyed out but the loader said it couldn't load it for "some unknown reason".
I then recalled that not all zip files and utilities are created equal and there is a variety of flavours. For the aforementioned test, I was using the Mac's built in file compressor but when I used a third party zip file utility (BetterZip) I was able to install the renamed file without problems.
The icon of the rbz file was different too- this time it showed up as a document icon

well in my case I had used Stuffit to zip the file. So I was using a third party zip program.
Both the files that I provided actually contained the identical zipped contents, they were just named differently.
I had renamed the extension on one of them to .rbz before handing it over. That one worked just fine, as I said.So I still have a mystery. The issue is not that the zip file was created with the native MAC zipper. It is interesting that you did experience some problem with that though.
I am at a loss. It doesn't make sense and I have 2 MAC users with whom it has happened in succession.

default_layer_geometry.rbzI made a little mistake having uploaded the .rb instead of the .rbz. Fixed now.

I could load both of these files. Renaming the zip file as rbz caused no problem.
I also note that the actual name of the file when it is installed is as per the plugin's real name - it matters not what name the rbz file is given. (I haven't used this method of installing plugins before so this was slightly unexpected but perfectly logical of course).

however, I recall that when I was first playing around with .rbz [end of last year] I had to use
On the file with changed name:
'more info' >> 'open with' >> 'change all' to set the file type to the default 'zip' opener 'Archive Utility.app'On my mac both just show a 'blank file' icon, unless I manually drag an alternate icon into 'more info' icon section.
Associating an icon to 'all' .rbz, is trickier, I'll make a shell script and up later...
should have custom icon [as below] on mac...
