Cool. So do they get tuned? Are the tube lengths critical?

I suppose you could make a mold and use fiberglass and epoxy resin. You could build a form out of foam and cover it very smoothly with plastic. Maybe use that saran wrap type stuff they wrap pallets of boxes with. Just make sure it is smooth. Then wrap it with glass saturated in epoxy. When the epoxy cures, you should be able to pull out the core.

You could make short intermediate sections that could be added between the end pieces. You know, with a sort of flared end on end. That would make it easier to build because the mold would be split into sections.

            modelhead,

I suppose you are aware of the dumbek, the middle eastern drum with a horn base. It seems to give it a more sensual sound, good for that technique when one presses on the skin to vary the pitch (shows how much I know the correct terms). Also the Conga's shape gives them a more organic tone. I'm looking for the right words here... You know, less flat and sharp, more resonance. Tom-toms on a drum set are the first step in that direction. Of course if you do this to all drums you might lose the variation in tone quality you get from a typical set.

Can you just do something with corrugated cardboard to experiment? The nature of the material will also affect the sound.

It would be a sensational stage piece, but the roadies will hate it.

              Hi Modelhead,

I would use PVC Fubing to experiment with.
A plumber could give you tecnical advice on welding gluing bending etc. of thise pipes.
Ask the plumber to sponsor you with scrap pieces of big diameter PVC pipes and bends for your experiment.
For the actual instrument i would use a technic used by Ortopedic technicians,
They first use a Gypsum inner mould ,cover this with a thin water-suluble plasic foil(PVA),then cover this
with a armour-fiber or textile ,then cover this with a second layer af plastic.
Then vacuum-suck a 2 component resin inbetween the two layers of plastic to impregnate and bond with the armour-fiber.
After curing ,you can finish the piece with normal tools.
Think about if you want to re-use your mold, and adapt your design to it.

              Greetings,

              Bep van Malde

I assume when you say armour-fiber that would include fiber glass?[/quote]
Yes ,glass-fiber ,carbonn fiber, polyester-fiber,etc the fiber and resin must match
The type of fiber-resin wil give the strength and look to the the design (if not painted).

i saw that this has already been done by the major drum companies, some time in the 80's. the drums were of fiber glass and had one normal, tunable, drum had and a large curved bell similar to yours. cool concept anyhow.

by the way, great model! i cant wait to see it rendered!
