Bruce, I've been curious about this for some time. How does this work? I mean, so you put a model on Google Earth... then what? How do people find you from there?

When uploading to the WareHouse for instance, you can enter some description AND also an URL to "further details for the model". Well, actually you can put any URL there though I could imagine that they check the target.

Also there's a link to the "author" (your WareHouse account) where they can see your uploaded works.

This whole thing appears in a little window which you can open from a small, yellow house icon hovering above the model in GE.

Alternatively, you can just export as kmz, create a folder in GE, insert the kmz in there and any other placemark (like a flythrough of your model with "scenes" or any additional info - almost whole, complete webpages with embedded images, links etc - all html codes are allowed).

        Gai...

Isn't it great how diverse the jobs you can do once you have a proficiency in 3D modeling? I love the fact that I get to do all kinds of work, which all stem from producing 3D models.

modeling, image manipulations, photography (for making sky domes and virtual tours), video editing, the list goes on. I can hardly wait until 3d stereo animations become viable!

It still seems, though, that the backbone of what we do is modeling and that GE is just another tool in the arsenal. Would my product be better off if GE kept getting better and SU stayed as it is now, or if GE stayed as it is now and SU's feature set expanded? For me, I guess GE already does anything I could need it for (until, and if, I could start actually using GE product), whereas I want to still be using SU12 in 10 years, generating instantaneous, real time photoreal environments, making stereo 3d animations, with raytraced native exports, integrating animated textures into models, an integral lighting system, all accomplished by waving my hands and moving my eyes. πŸ’š

I'm with you kannonball...it is such an interesting business for those who like to create and discover. Something new everyday and a very rewarding learning experiences in that you find things that can be applied in new ways every day.

I hope that the Google products we are using grow stronger together. I think the applications are limitless. I see many unusual capabilities. The one that struck me this Christmas was tracking Santa in real time (or as close as it gets). That means a lot of things to me ...for example...why not track packages...why not track planes...how about your fleet of vehicles...etc etc.

Fun stuff that could also pay..$$

Chuck's version of Santa Claus' tracking is getting on Fed Ex's website 15 times a day watching the new, and highly anticipated, computer travel across the country. I felt like a 5 year old πŸ’š

wow this thread is inspiring, it really shows that anyone can do this work, get paid, but above all do what they really want and what they are really good at. Personally, i have been looking for ways i can use my sketchup experience and knowledge and create a full time job at it. I'm sure there are ways, and this thread has really opened my eyes towards getting there.

Currently i have knowledge with sketchup and learning 3DSmax too.

Well, there's FormFonts, of course. That all started out with me seeing an opportunity and a demand for 3D low-poly figures; and Fred Abler starting a site called Objective Networks, which later "inspired" the 3D Warehouse. To this day, the Warehouse bears more than a passing resemblance to Objective Networks
(This is a very slow-loading archive version, not the actual site...and yes, Martina is right there near the top) πŸ˜‰
Heck, you can even still download her.
