      Hi Guys,

I saw a documentary on Mens Sheds a few days ago and thought it was a fantastic idea. The Mens Shed in the doc was based in Youghal, Co. Cork (coastal town)and the guys where making boats.

From what I gathered the Sheds are open from 9:30 to 12:30 every day and everyone can do their own thing or work in groups.

Most of the guys are retired tradesmen with 40+ years experience. I thought, what a fantastic way for them to pass on their skills to younger men, many of them out of work!

There is another side to it also, the slogan says,
“Men don’t talk face to face; they talk shoulder to shoulder” This is so true! So these Mens Sheds benefit the old timers also!

Its worth checking out the site, http://www.menssheds.ie/ to learn a little more. We are all going to be old timers at some stage if we are lucky!

      Mike

This is a nasty cool idea Mike.
If someone set these up at North American shopping malls it would give purpose to those nameless, drifting, lost males, attached to the mall benches (not to mention giving their wives plenty of time to shop).

        Just monkeying around....like Monsanto

          Great idea, Mike. 👍 👍
Also a great opportunity for some serious male bonding. 😉

            Awesome concept, Mike.

It reminds me of the growing trend of maker spaces. These are fully equipped shops that operate on a subscription basis. I just learned of one opening in the Twin Cities at our last local Sketchup Meetup. You can read about the maker space here: http://www.mnmill.org

It seems the Men's Sheds takes it one step further, almost like a help forum as well as a shop. That's very appealing to me as someone who's not familiar with some methods like metalworking or electronics.

I can see these taking off. BTW, I think the idea originated in Oz, would take them 😉

In the modern Western World the extended family is nearly a thing of the past. I grew up with both sets of grandparents close by. I learned a lot from them, most thrift, not that a lot rubbed off 😒

I think these Mens Sheds offer the old-timers an opportunity they will relish. And hey! yes having them attached to shopping malls would be a great idea, I for one would gladly drop in for a chat and maybe even a bit of work.

I am always fascinated when talking to older craft and trades men. Learning about the ways things were done pre power tools is always interesting.

Spread the word and keep an eye out in your local area 👍

Good to see our older folk having a 'reason' as well as a place to rag about they're missus.....

This ad is not associated with it though:

A double door glass fridge, Dart board, pool table, card table and radio.

Retina ID at the Entry that only allows males to enter.

Oh, and a wood fired over for the breads!
