Autocad Conundrum...

ok so off topic and maybe an evil topic here... but I have a question for some of you autocaders...
when I'm pulling dimensions; I pick the first side of the object, then the other end of the desired dimension, then I pull in the direction I want the dim line to go and type in a architectural distance. such as 3' 6' or 9'
I've just realized that half the time my lines are not actually 3' 6' and 9' from the object. it seems that my mind has picked an area somewhere close to that dimension and it lands in that area.
am I crazy or did that used to work? and how do you determine how far away from the object your dimension line is?

I don't ever remember being able to do that but I stopped using Acad exclusively about 5 years ago. I remember their being a Cadd standard about the distance, I will try to dig it up.
In Revit the dim. snaps to a standard or you can drag it out farther if you wish. Really handy. -
I assume you are doing orthographic stuff. Can you click on the dimension block and see the grips? If so, you should be able to click on the Node/Grip at the end of the witness line, it turns red and you can shift it any specified distance, just type in that distance while in ortho mode. Also, you can shift the dimtext by dragging its grip. Specific snaps can be called up by Shift rightclick and select from the list, such as endpoint, mid between 2 points, intersection, etc. For further information, if you have not already seen it, dailyautocad.com has a lot of good info in the Tutorial tab.

Yes, it's quiet odd behavior! But, you can do it other way.
First place dimensions by clicking, than use DIMSPACE command to auto adjust distance. First click base dimension, than select all U want to be adjusted to it.
