Have moved to Linux Mint 10. Sketchup in Linux?
-
I searched for threads and info and it's a little old. Has any progress been made?
I really, really, like Linux Mint so far. It's extremely quick and agile and fun to tweak. Just about everything so far is plug/play. Wireless setups, printers, external wifi card, etc. Amazing that coming from winxp and expecting the worst, it turned out (so far) to be even more user friendly.
I was using Sketchup 8 professional and am hoping that my learning curve can still be put to use. I'd rather not go back to XP just to use Sketchup. It might be a matter of finding another simple CAD program for Linux rather than go back to XP.
Any updates on running Sketchup in Linux?

Does WINE run under Mint ?

There's no native version of SketchUp (the SketchUp team is rather Mac-centered). You can add you request on Google's forum, but don't expect that they change their mind soon.
You can nevertheless get "quite good" results using SketchUp in Wine. In the latest version (Wine 1.3.x), almost everything works now. There are some tricks necessary for web dialogs and previews/image exports seem not to work for anyone. I'd recommend to use SketchUp free, because Pro depends on .Net framework which used to cause problems (but you can give Pro a try).

Thank you very much for that. I checked into draftsight but turned out to be uninterested in putting time into learning a 2d program. Guess I'll try Wine and an install of SK 8 before I give up entirely. I make a lot of use of the export functions to share ideas, but generally am able to find a number of workarounds for sharing files anyway if one or another does not work.
Any other suggestions beyond "draftsight" that might be 3d and a little more full featured without necessarily require a steep learning curve?

Very limited choices and nothing like SketchUP

From what I've heard, people with nVidia cards has had more luck with Linux + Wine + SketchUp than ATI users.

There is BRLCAD. It was developed by the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratory (hence the acronym,) ... and is OpenSource.
The wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRL-CADHere's the download page (I assume for pre-compiled binaries.)
http://brlcad.org/d/download
It lists platforms: BSD, Linux, Solaris, OSX, IRIX and Windows.I have not looked at it in years.. and it's now up to version 7.18 or so. (Might be time to take another look.)
Also it's a solid modeler, not a surface modeler like Sketchup.

As for Sketchup going to Linux,
Aidan Chopra (the Sketchup product evangelist) spoke at my uni about a month back and someone asked about plans of Sketchup going to Linux. He was pretty clear that it wasn't on Google's list of things do.

I would think an Android edition would have higher priority with the Google management.
It is strange that OSX is based on BSD Linux, and we would think porting to Linux might be a lot easier than porting to Windows.

As far as I heard from a Googler, they would like to completely overhaul the UI, but don't have the time. If they cannot achieve this, then the chance of porting SketchUp to another toolkit is rather low. Although Google massively applies Linux in its company (Maps developers, streetview etc.), they consider for their products mainly the market share outside the company (whereas the Mac OS X share is mostly a US phenomenon).
In the SketchUp Help Forum, there are rapidly increasing requests for a version for iPad, iPhone, but also Android and ChromeOS (?) users demand their rights. I think if Google will ever support another platform, then it would be the web.
