Hi,
here is a little exercise with the world as a glass ball.

That's really neat. I assume the continents are projected textures? Did you use Kerkythea glass texture? What does the backside of Africa look like? (this ought to generate some interesting replies)

Hi Mitcorb,
I took a photo of a globe projection (I do not know how this projection is called) and made it into a transparent PNG and placed it on a sphere (not projected). Yes the Glas is from Kerkythea.

Do you mean you used an actual camera, or did you sample an image? Either way, it's a nice exercise, and the final image is well done.
I am only now experimenting with Kerkythea. I am handicapped by elderly equipment, and one of the things that has held me back is the fact that no matter what equipment you have, it still takes time to see the results as opposed to "toon shading" directly in Sketchup. -
Well done!
Also, thank you for posting the texture.

Sweet!

Wiki has a fairly detailed discussion on map projections:

There is also this very nice website on a cornucopia of subjects (check out the discussion on aspect ratios):

Hi Watkins,
thanks for these links. Could be a cylindrical projection. If anyone is interested, the model(12MB) can be downloaded at:
