You have not tryed Sculptris?
Seems there are possibility of some analogy with these tortuous spherical works -
If this object were ever manufactured, it would be cool to have the geometry etched into the surface. It actually really looks good.

Frederik, I think its Twilight thats smoking hot not me! It does what you expect, so easy to get good results and very stable.
I forgot about Sculptris, cheers. Although I want to stay with mac only software. I HATE windows and only use it for Twilight, I will give Sculptirs a whirl though. The real daddy of these apps is Blender. I dunno why I always go for spheres, kinda majestic.
Dale: Imagine polishing the surface! ooh it would be so nice. labour of love! When I go back to uni in September I will 3D print this model and place a bulb inside it. You could subdivide and smooth it further......with sandpaper

I a job at an arts centre once (many moons ago). One of my tasks was to manage the pit fired pottery firing sessions.
After you create a clay piece you polish it with a spoon as it dries (the labor of love part), then bury it in a fire pit and light her up. Although there are things that you can add that will encourage certain colors, you have virtually no control on the outcome. The orb would be a candidate for this. Made in two pieces and assembled around the light globe. Attached is an example.
