      Have I gotten this right?
A "heavy" scene crashes on my work PC with Windows XP when running purge unused.
The same scene doesn't crash on my Laptop with Windows 7 64 bit.
Can it be that even if SU is 32 bit the 64bit machine has more "free RAM" available when the system has taken its "toll"?

        Yes that's my guess too.

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965
        RAM: OCZ Gold DDR3 1600MHz 12Gb
        Video: Asus Radeon HD4870 X2 2Gb
        Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe 1366 Intel X58

Quite possibly. On a 32 bit system the whole machine only has ~3GB of memory that has to be used for everything (OS, programs etc.), but with a 64 bit system you can basically have as much memory as you can afford, and the OS will make it available to your programs so its quite possible that SU has more memory available to it.

There are one extra factor in play here: some applications has a flag set that they can address a little extra memory, most doesn't

            32bit Application on:

            Windows 32bit
            2GB by default
3GB is the application is Large Address Aware

            Windows 64bit
2GB by default (Sketchup is one of these)
4GB is the application is Large Address Aware (Vectorworks 2010 is one of these)
