Time attributed models in google earth.
-
I worked out recently that I can edit a KML file in a text editor.
I took an existing time attributed model, right clicked in GE on the object within the places tab?? (big panel on left) copied then opened a text editor and pasted. The kml code is then pasted in.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<kml xmlns="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:gx="http://www.google.com/kml/ext/2.2" xmlns:kml="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">
<Document>
<name>KmlFile</name>
<TimeSpan>
<begin>1969</begin>
<end>1997-00</end>
</TimeSpan>
<Style id="sn_ylw-pushpin80">
</Style>
(etc etc)
I then did exactly the same thing with an existing model i had created that i wanted to attribute with time. I then copy and pasted the <TimeSpan> ....</TimeSpan> into my model's kml making sure it was placed in the same position as the original (is this important?). Obviously you can edit the dates. I then saved the kml into x directory and then loaded it. The time slider loaded based upon the dates entered.The next step i would like to do is to attribute objects (eg construction components) in sketchup and export to GE. From the looks of the code each kml can only have one date stamp (i wonder if it can come on and off then on again??). If i had individual objects that i wanted to display with a different date series (eg walls - start july finish august, roof start august finish december) these would have to be different kmls right. I know there is an attribute editor in sketchup which might come in handy. But as far as i know you can only export the whole file as a kmz ((ie one kml.) and not (eg selected) components. Im sure a work around for this exists eg save as, delete wont you dont want, and export as individual kml. Can you think of an easier way?
Can we export multiple time attributed objects from one sketchup model into one kmz?
We are working with a SU plugin called 4D virtual builder. I would like to be able to export this into GE.

Hi Job,
I have no clue about these time stamps and how you edit them but a kmz file is practically a zip archive and in GE it works as a "folder". Now if you open it in GE and open a bunch of other kmz files in GE too, you can simply drag and drop those other files into this "folder". Would that be a workaround?
Also, have a look at this post by Aerilius:

He also wrote up a short tutorial about it:

I must have missed this topic.
Jwallis,
The possibility of putting a 4D model into Google earth and making it possible to navigate in time in Google earth and seeing the model being constructed is something we are looking into.
I'll keep you posted! -
Hi Pout,
Exactly what I would like to see in GE:
http://sites.google.com/site/3dbasecamp2010/unconference-sessions/layers-in-google-earthI would use it for archaeology but of course it could be very useful for a lot of other purposes, too.

Hey Gaieus,
I think we will be able to manage that. I'll keep you posted and if i'll get back to you if we have any questions.
