Have you seen this? Enable 3d buildings (ok you know this) and go to center of Madrid, Vienna, Athens, NY. I don't know how they did it, mostly in SU. Still don't understand it, this is huge. Athens Greece (my town), its a chaotic model, even so they did it.
Here's a 'photo' from historical centre of Athens, 5 min PP, thats all. Have fun.

I noticed in the "credits/copyright" at the bottom of the screen something called Basarsoft. This may be a contractor that compiled Google Earth data, such as satellite and Street View imagery. Or it may not be that, just a guess.
I remember being surprised that all of the mundane buildings in Tokyo were modeled a few years ago when most everything else was still flat, and then looking at Athens at that time, I said "Nah, they'll never do it"

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

Athens is one of the cities that it's possible to model buildings with Google Building Maker. http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/buildingmaker?hl=en

A lot of the buildings you'll be able to see who created the buildings by clicking on them. You'll be able to see the 3DW description and get further info from that.

And what if you could visit Ancient Athens on Google Earth? Or visit ancient Rome, Byzantium, Beijing? Tikal? I know there's a lot of modeling done for some of these. I suppose it has to be of the proper file size for Google Earth.

they should charge to view it. I understand Greece needs the money.

If I make it look easy...It is probably easy

                        I see you point leedeetee.
Here's a 'sketch' via pshp for a scene I have in mind. About economical crisis in greece, a Giorgio DeChirico influence, its complicated. A 3dCoat google earth mix. Working on the full SU scene now.
                        'The roman' 😄
