Rocky, wait until you see the finished piece. You mention fur! Yep, that can be done πŸ˜„ All joking aside, it is possible to use whatever infill fabric the owner wants in the side and door panels. The idea behind this is the keep weight / cost down and offer the possibility to coordinate with the room's colour scheme πŸ‘

I visited a local timer merchants today with my friend Val and we hand selected 4 cubes of European Cherry. I think we got a good deal a €120. At least the production process has started πŸ˜„

I will post a few pics of the cutting and planing, seeing as there are a few following this topic.

                          Mike

Be prepared for major change in colour if you use cherry. The timber reacts incredibly quickly to UV light and darkens quite alot so if you are trying to tie the colour in with other pieces in the room you should be aware of it. Maybe use a UV resistant lacquer on the finish to prevent. Dont get me wrong - I love cherry, but it has a tendency to change colour rapidly. Can't wait to see the finished article.

Thanks for that advise Dermot. I had read up on Cherry and was aware of the colour change in time. It was the best available timber so we went with it. That UV resistant lacquer coat you mention sounds like a good idea. Can you recommend a brand?

I use Becker Acroma lacquers and stains for my work but they come in industrial size containers. You should be able to get a smaller jar for your project from some of the good painting and decorating business in Ennis or try the homevalue store, they should do it too.

Thanks Dermot. Val is cutting today but I am not allowed near him while is is working. He says I would only slow him up. I'll drop in later and buy him a couple of beers ...... only if he does not make a balls of my cherry πŸ˜†

Well, we are making some progress. Here are a couple of shots of Val's workshop and work in progress.

Dermot, your advise is always appreciated. Have no doubts about that πŸ‘

Yeah Val has a great setup with tools and machines for all kinds of things. He is retired now, looking after his rentals and playing golf. The workshop is there mostly for storage and building maintenance but he still likes knocking out bits and pieces.

We will have a good laugh putting the Corner Cubby together. There have already been a few lively 'debates' about the best way to put it together already with a few 'fs' flying around πŸ˜„ We will get there in the end πŸ‘
