The Art of SketchUp - part 2: Sci-Fi

Great as always Ken

Hi everyone,
Sorry, I have been quiet the past few months. I have been quite busy with work as well as babysitting my little princess.
Unfortunately, I still cannot show any of my current projects from work. But here's a personal project I did.
This was my submission for the NVArt Challenge. I did not win anything, but it was really fun and a great learning experience to improve my modeling skills.
My original plan was to build these models and some architectural futuristic buildings/environment with people in there. Do some renders and paint over in the style of Syd Mead. But time wasnβt on my side. I started about 10 days before the deadline and worked a few hours at night (whenever I did not have to soothe my little princess back to sleep).
I only had time to finish the models.
Modeled in Sketchup and rendered with Vray / HDRI.
Thanks for viewing and have a terrific day!

p.s. I also work on some fantasy architecture as personal project. Make sure to check out The Art of sketchup - part 1: Fantasy soon.

@ Sepo: Thank you. Glad you like them.
@ Phil Rader: Thanks for your comments. Cool architecture projects that you're working on. I have been to Minneapolis once before with my wife to visit her parents. That was "meet the parents" trip. LOL
@ Liam: I would love to see what you'd come up with if you had time to enter the competition. i am sure it will be an awesome model. Just checked out some of your latest stuff. I love the lego model and the USMC tumbler. Great job!
@ Dolphus: Thank you, Sir. How is your airplane project going?
@ Michalis: Thanks for your thumbs up. check out the thread The Art of Sketchup - part 1: Fantasy. I replied to your message about the accuracy of the Greek temple.
@ modelhead: thank you for your comment.
@ Fletch: Thank you, I should.
@ Suc: Thanks. I wish I could post more of the Sci-fi stuff but i don't have anymore. Hopefully, it time allows I will do some for spaceships and futuristic cars.
@ Pilou: merci beaucoup. J'espere que tout va bien en France. A+
As promised, I have posted a couple images of the current personal project that I am doing lately. Check them out in the thread The Art of Sketchup - part 1: Fantasy.

Cheers, yeah I was disappointed that I only found the competition when there was little time left.
I think sketchup is a great tool and I love taking it head to head with the 3dsmax and Lightwave users in competitions its always a fun challenge. It annoys me sometimes when people just dismiss sketchup as a sub standard piece of software, yes its true its not as powerful as the others cannot handle large files and has a few big flaws but its still pretty awesome!
What do you use to paint over your models just a tablet and photoshop I assume?http://events.cgsociety.org/NVArt/05/ this was the competition i was thinking about by the way I assume its the same one?

Yes, Sketchup is not as powerful as the other 3D programs and cannot handle large files, but it is an awesome piece of software that sometimes allow one to do things that Maya or Max users would not be able to do in a certain amount of time. Indeed, Sketchup is so intuitive and really fast for modeling. Some of my coworkers who use Maya are really amazed by what I can do with sketchup. Things that I can do in an a few minutes or a couple of hours would take them hours or days to do the same things with all the details.
Also, Sketchup is free! The best things in life are free, right?

For this particular project, I used materials and rendered with Vray/ HDRI. No Photoshop post work.
But for other projects, yes I use a tablet and photoshop for post work most of the time.

Yup, that's the one.

Hi all,
So I mentioned in my other thread that I have stopped working on the two fantasy architectural interiors to focus on the EVE Online -Create a Starship contest http://news.deviantart.com/article/128272/. Thanks Liam for letting me know. More sleepless nights ahead but it will be worth it. The prizes are so sweet.
I started the model a few days ago. I have less than 3 weeks and working on it a few hours at night, I hope I will finish it on time.
Thanks for visiting and have a terrific day!

The little dots you see here are the human scales (1.8m). Yep, that space ship is huge. This will be my biggest model. The length is 1km.
