Start changing it and see what happens.

Perhaps it refers to the color of the letterbox bands when you change the aspect ratio.

Bingo!!
I would not have guessed to try that. Makes sense now - since the default colour was 50% black.
That's a very interesting property.

50% white looks nicer.
