Detailed Terrain Texture Modding

Hi to All,
Yesterday I found a page http://detailedterrain.com/index.php?page=guide
with a description of texture modding. But this side leaves many questions unanswered. I have no experience how to work with alpha maps and how this technology is applied. Certainly, it is also similar to others like me.
Does anyone know a tutorial that helps to find the entrance into this technology and how to work with. I'd really appreciate very much for any help .
