Grooving Planes

Matt Kenney, Associate Editor at Fine Woodworking made a couple of grooving planes and so I had a little doodle. I need to find a better European beech texture, though.

Very nice images. I have a couple of grooving planes myself, although one is a little the worse for woodworm. It seems that wooden grooving planes tend to be collected and displayed as decorations in the UK as I have often seen them in bric-a-brac shops. Do you use wooden grooving planes?

In general, shop-made, wooden body hand planes have been seeing a resurgence among the 'galoots', those woodworkers who are very much into using non-electron powered hand tools. The later James Krenov had designed some interesting small wood bodied planes that have been the inspiration for many woodworkers who might not have built their own planes.
I don't have a grooving plane at the moment but I'm intrigued by these and might make a set. Of course that requires that I have some time in my work shop. I like these planes very much for their simplicity. If you looked at the site I linked to you see they were designed for a specific job and not being adjustable, are limited to making 1/8 inch wide by 1/8 inch deep grooves.

mics_54, the Router Boss will just tell the planes stories about how I only collect tools any more. I don't ever actually use them because I'm too busy with other things.
