Google Earth SketchUp Project 4 Anyone Interested
-
Is there a SketchUp artist out there who’d be interested in modeling the North Shore Towers in Queens, New York?

High-res photos (135 MB): http://www.northshoretowers.com/photos/sketchup.zipThese prominent towers deserve a home in Google Earth’s 3D layer. They’re the tallest structures around and serve as a landmark for motorists on the Grand Central Parkway, Long Island Expressway, and Cross Island Parkway – and residents in the surrounding neighborhoods use them as a compass to orient themselves. They’ve received much press since they were built in the 70’s, so this would make for a fantastic addition to Google Earth’s growing 3D landscape!
I’ve been attempting to model the towers in SketchUp, and needless to say – I’ve been failing miserably. This project is well beyond my skill level – I can barely model a shed! So if anyone’s interested in taking on this fun little project, please be my guest

You should perhaps warn people that the hires photo zip is a 135mb download.

K thanks. Corrected. Sorry bout that

I'd encourage you to keep trying to model it yourself They dont look to far above 'garden shed' type modelling, really. The only tricky bit would be getting the textures right, but im sure you could do it with a bit of help.
Feel free to ask lots of questions

lol sorry, I wasn't sure which of the two forums to post it in
This thread has become more about my fails than the topic I posted on
-
mmmmm, sorry about that. It just gets my goat. Next time, just post it once and a mod will move it if it's not in the right place. moving a topic is a lot less hassle than merging /deleting them
-
Well, I merged the two topics now.
Welcome to the forums BTW but as Remus says, this should be a piece of cake; just a couple of flat, rectangular surfaces. Tart building it and we'll gladly help.

Along with posting here, I also posted in the SketchUp Google Group, which resulted in an attempt by two separate modelers. So I'm updating the record here in case anyone comes across this post and wonders if it was ever completed.

What I'm wondering is, will the folks at Google Earth choose based on which one was submitted first, or which one is of better quality? The first link is my personal favorite, however the second link was submitted first. Any insight?

Once the models are submitted, the QA Team decides by quality. Even if there's already an accepted model on the "official" 3D Layer in GE, whenever there is a better model, there's a chance that they replace the old one.
