Exterior siding
-
Does anybody have any ideas to make realistic siding in Sketchup? There's one in materials which is O.K., but I'd like to find something more realistic.

You could sign up for FormFonts. They've got a lot of great textures there...

If your handy with photoshop you'll probably find something you can use here: http://www.cgtextures.com/
Might take a bit of searching though.

Thanks, everybody--those are great, but i don't think they will work for what I need!
What if I drew a sample wall with 3D siding I constructed--could I somehow turn that into a material which I could apply in various projects?

Show us what you need and I am sure a solution will appear.

This is the general idea. Is there a way to turn this into a material to apply to a wall?
-
no, but you could make it into a component, then attach it to walls and scale it.. although you'd need to cut out the doors and windows everytime.
well just a minute, one pain in tha ass option would be (in a seperate file) to scale it to your wall size with wall orientation and shadows set the same, then either render or export 2D depanding what you're doing. then import the (render or 2D file) into SU as a material and put it on the coresponding wall.
But hey, you asked for it.

it looks like this:
its not a bad idea actually! a type of long hand texture baking.
