Geo-location & SU Models
-
Hi all,
A technical question: I'm building models of the town where I live. One of the issues is matching up the walls of adjacent buildings. I've been putting .kmz files into my GE and then fixing problems. Sometimes this takes several iterations to get right.
My question is: if I use one Scene from GE to build two or more seperate models (each with its own file)and then upload the individual models to 3DW, will 3DW recognize them as seperate models or will it replace each one as the next is uploaded?
Thanks,
Tom -
To make it sure, you can save the file first then upload one load (building) then open the file again, upload the second and so on. You can do this as long as you don't re-save it after an upload because (AFAIK) that's when SU inserts the mid number (the model ID) into the file. If you don't save this data, you cannot overwrite your existing, uploaded model.
Tip: put the individual buildings (groupoed?) onto separate layers and always keep the visibility of only one on. SU won't export anything that is on a hidden layer. This way you can easily and quickly upload models from the same file - just always open the original for the next one.

Thanks, Gaieus. I'll try it today and let you know how it works.

Hi,
I followed Gaieus's advice and it worked!
I had to create two files, one for each of the visable models, although they were all contained in different layers with the same terrain. One possible shortcomming: the file size in GE seems to include the hidden layers, so each model is roughly twice as big as it would be on its own. But it sure made the sllignment a lot faster and easier.

Good o hear, Tom, it was just stabbing in the dark...
I can imagine however that only the image files (of the hidden buildings) raise the file size not the (not even exported) geometry. (Should look into it more in the details). -
I noticed that the .kmz & .zip files were a lot smaller. Maybe they only contain the details of the visible model.

Hi Tom and G:
Not sure if you are aware of this or not, but once you put a model into GE you can select its properties and then (in the GE screen) you can move, rotate, and scale the model using the mouse (see "Editing Places and Folders" in the GE User Guide on line).
This gives you flexibility if things are not precisely placed in GE.
If you have common structures you want to use in your GE site, for example a traffic light or telephone pole, after you place one instance you can copy it in GE (Ctrl-C), then paste it as many times as you wish (Ctrl-V) and relocate and position each instance. Make sure all imported models are in a common folder or in subfolders. The method you use depends on how you intend using GE.
The attached KMZ (using GE version 5) was made by importing a bldg and moving the model into a common folder and positioning a bldg if necessary. The process was repeated for the other bldg and a flagpole. Then making copies of the flagpole in GE and moved and rotated each. Open the Kmz and try moving each model.

This is amazing- just what I need to learn how to do.
I looked at the Users guide but I am not finding how save the changes back to a SU file- I am guessing you save bak into the kmz file then open that? Still fiddling with it..
