I was thinking of a tool which allowed the user to list the total area for which certain materials has been applied. Thinking of it in term of architects doing volume planning or calculating mount of materials. You apply different material to different types of areas you want to calculate.

I was thinking of a webdialog presenting it in a list. And maybe being able to investigate each material, so that it lists the individual areas that makes up the total. Then off course an export to csv maybe.

Just to make sure, is there such a tool around already which I've missed?

If not, do you lot have any good ideas for how it'd behave?

Where do you find that script?

Activate the Ruby script examples (or utilities?) under Preferences > E!xtensions. Cost will be in the Plugins folder.

Also, if you right click on a face > Select > all with same material then go to Entity info, it will show you the total area of the material in use (even saying how many faces are selected). (It only works within the same context though)

Ok. Found it. but it always return $0 for me. And it's in dollars and imperial units, so not very desirable. And it doesn't list the areas of the materials, which is what I had in mind.

But you can still see the source and tweak it I guess. It needs to calculate the area somehow (and changing units shouldn't be that hard - even I could do it in certain scripts with hard coded, original imperial input).

p.s. I certainly do not want to give a lesson about what I totally ignore just trying to raise ideas... 😳

I've got a prototype. But I'm not sure if I'll go forward with this project after seeing this: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=19084
                      Looks very promising.
