I'm looking at slowly switching my career focus to more computer design etc and was wonder, what are the most commonly used programs people on here are using and what are they used for? Looking for input. List in your reply if you like.
      Cheers, Jeff

Traitor! goes to find lynch mob...

On a more serious note, if your looking for something to use in combination with SU, MoI is a good one to start with.

Its a very basic NURBS modeller which can export to .skp, which is always helpful. Also useful for doing those things SU just cant.

Depending on what you plan to design really.

I use SU as my primary modeler, however like every app out there SU has it's limits (there I said it) and when that happens I need to include other apps into my workflow.

I use z-brush for surface modeling, Hexagon2 for product modeling and some surface and nurb cage work, Geocontrol for terrain modeling, Onyx and Vue for tree creation, Imagesynth for texture creation, Maya for rigging and animation, 3D Max for high end product rendering, Vue for terrain rendering, Podium for fast conceptual rendering, there are others that are used less frequently that I have not included.

I also use a tablet and a 3d connexion space explorer in my daily workflow.

I've bounced around through a lot of demoing 3D products. The ones I have the highest affinity with are -
            Sketchup - Modo - 3DS Max - Vue - Lightwave + LWCAD

I started out with Max, then switched over to SU for 90% of my work. I still use Max for certain things, but Modo is my new love and the more I use it, the more I love it. I just upgraded to Vue 7 and so far it has blown me away. I'm in the process of re-rendering some of my stuff I previously rendered in Vue 6, and the difference in quality and speed is amazing. The new radiosity engine is producing results that are close to Vray in my opinion. If money is an issue, I think Modo gives you the most bang for the buck, with lightwave as a close second.

              Remus,

Don't worry. I'm not jumping ship. I love SU and have been buying the latest plugins and will continue to do so. I know your kidding around but I just don't want to be buying any other programs without researching them first.

              Solo and Earthmover,

Thanks for your input and I will check out your programs. Have either of you tried Rhino?

              Appreciated,

              Jeff

Apart from SU +Podium LW9.5 +LWCAD+Kray... It will be interesting with LW9.6 as one will be able to use external render engines....Also heard Vray is making standalone so there will be explosion of non native LW rendering.

F-Prime is a great realtime render option for lightwave and a lot of guys are using a lightwave to Modo workflow, which is pretty seamless. It will be interesting to see how Vray handles the UI for a stand alone version.

Click Draw, I've used Rhino, but it always felt counter intuitive to me....but nurbs modeling always does. If you can get past the learning curve, Rhino has a great adaptability factor with countless different plugins..
