Help with sandstone texture please
-
I'm no good at rendering so I'm not expecting miracles, but can anybody advise me on improving the look of this sandstone? I realise it will probably look better if I model all the brick courses, or does anybody have a suitable displacement map?

Maybe if you are most especific, what render package you use? or maybe post in other sub forum like http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewforum.php?f=80 with the title, for example {vray} Help with sandstone texture or {maxwell} Help with sandstone texture

Thanks, Well I've been playing with the vray demo but I'm running out of time on the project so I'll just model all the brick courses and do it as best as I can in KT (btw I'm not knocking KT, I know its good, but I'm not )

The model and render currently looks great! Is that the V-Ray or KT render?
I wouldn't bother with dispacement unless the masonry is heavily rusticated or you need close-ups from oblique angles, a bump map should be fine for most purposes. I did this render a few years ago (not great I know!), I struggled with the sandstone until I created a textures from scratch in PS and a bump map for the mortar joints, also attached (I just desaturated and increased the contrast to make corresponding bump maps). The conclusion I came to was that you have to create large textures with lots of individual blocks as it's the variation in colour between them that makes sandstone look like it does.
I've attached a couple of my standard sandstone block textures, they're nothing special, but have a small mortar border so they're useful for building custom bonded textures in PS by duplicating layer and adjusting hues and levels. The forum software has cropped them, but if you right click>"save picture as" they'll download full size. The third one is the one we used for this house as we wanted a custom bond. For your project you'd probably need to create a bigger texture with more masonry blocks and a little variation in colour to help each block look like an individual element, trouble is you'd also need to create textures for the arches- prob not an option with tight timescale, might be quicker to model arches and apply 2 or three very similar sandstone materials with slight colour variations.
Hope this helps,

It is indeed Rich.
Thanks for the advice and the textures Jackson, much appreciated.
