Finnaly learned how to make these, took 7 hours to render the 500 +- frames at 15fps
This file is 4mb at very reduced quality, the original is 450mb Avi,looks good but yea...

Cool animation! Did you use VirtualDub?
Nice to see that not only building can be modeled in SketchUp.
I like your ships, great models!Regards, Ward

Indeed so,a Tutorial on KT animations shaved hours off "figure it out" time
Thx glad you like them, now to get them to move and have material sails...maybe some ppl walking around and doing stuff.

Hi Marius,
Great video (ehm... for a great render of course a great model is the first step so that should've gone first).
I can imagine the difference in quality due to this compression so just can pity that we cannot see.
As for open sails, I'd suggest Soap Skin and Bubble if you haven't know it yet. Some great effets can be achieved like in the images here.
-
Thx Gaieus,Ive always used SSB for making my sails,I make them as low poly as possible, the simulator has fps problems if they are to high when switching from port tack models to starboard. But what i need is to be able to add wind and a material to have a moving animation, similar to what can be easily done in Maya.
And of course real water would be nice and a moving ship, but I think I might need a FX department for that
-
Ah,yeah,as now I read the whole thread back again, you already mentioned SSB.
How big is your SU model (polygon wise as well as file size) now? I would always wonder to which point it is still easily navigable and manageable in SU.
Also, how do you actually start a model like this? I see that you have drawings but then you draw polylines from section to section or what? I guess the basis is the hull always.
-
The SU file is about 14mb and poly count 57,000 ,not hard to navigate in SU at all
heres the WIP thread http://hangsim.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=620Here is Leopard,I did this thread from the very start to finish :

Thanks, very interesting reading (images)!

That link seems to be broken (gives a 404 error to me), Mannie.

Those are great ships. I was on a 14 day trip on "De eendracht" when i was 16. http://flickr.com/photos/renerotterdam/480433851/

Oops, edited the link, now it works
-
IS it just me or are you fixated on vessels with long bowsprits? I am far from an expert but the vessels you have rendered seem to have some extreme sail plans.
-
Rodger I am not sure what you mean by "extreme" sail plan?many sails?Sail area? Sail to hull ratio?
Ither or I do love these ships and Hope to get Employment on one some day,but for now modeling them is great!Ive started HMS Bellona 74 two days ago and thought you guys would like to see how it is done in a WIP thread, maybe Ill just hack this one
There are still many flaws and tweaking takes loads of time, and this being the biggest ship ive done to date,it should take even longer.
-
Wow! Great modeling , Marius.
Congrats.
I really like the renders, even without the bump.
They haven't got that typical Kerkythea look.
Very nice! -

Chris... I respect your talent a lot, but a comment like that is just ...
You of all can make any render look almost identical with your tonemapping, regardless of the application you've used, so I'm really not sure what you mean...There's a saying...

Please leave out such lame comments...

That's how I interpreted your remark ...
No more coffee for Kim today!
-
It was not meant as a bad remark, Frederik.
Vray also has its specific look, as has Maxwell, etc...I tried to point out that Marius managed to create a personal style, an athmosphere, something you can't create without stepping beyond the typical settings of a render engine.
(for instance, a very nice use of HDR light instead of a default physical sky, etc). -
OK... Sorry for the rant, Chris... Please accept my apology...!!
I just interpreted it the wrong way... My bad...@unknownuser said:

Yeah - guess you're right about that, Stinkie...
Point taken...And once again, sorry for hi-jacking this thread...

I am just surprised as how far forward the jibs are. That creates a tremendous amount of leverage, however if your models are accurate representations of real vessels that worked successfully then I can assume that all is as it should be. I think the fault is with my memory but those bowsprits are certainly way out there.
-
Ahhh I C Rodger,
I assure you that my models are accurate to plans,Ive had this Question before as the bowspirit on a ship rig usually contributes 1/3 of the overall length of the ship. For comparison HMS Leopard being a 50gun is in build a bit smaller than the 1st rate HMS Victory and the Victory has 5,468.4 m2 of sails, more than todays 5 masted Royal clipper which has 42 seperate sails.
