Photoshop Question

I have a quick question about PS, but I'm sure it will be applicable for other software also.
What I am trying to do is create a front cover for a booklet which contains some images, text and graphics. I realize PS may not be the ideal piece of software but I don't have ant DTP software and I'm unsure which one is the best to purchase.

I create the paper size A4 (210x297mm) and add my images and text. Where I have a minor problem is upon printing.
I place some images right up against the border so there is no white space, but when I print out or save a png there is a white border. What is the correct way of correcting this?

ps If anyone can suggest software more suitable and user friendly for creating brochures/booklets etc.

When you get to the print dialog i tihnk there is a little tick-box that says 'scale to fit page' or something similar. Un tick that and it should print to the edges.

Dylan, it shouldn't do that. I was about to say that you can only print to the edge of the paper if you actually have a desktop printer that allows that...most don't. But then I noticed that you have the same problem exporting a png. That seems odd. You haven't missed any thing obvious, have you...like scrolling right to the edge of the image area?

The normal practice in the printing industry is to create a "bleed" all round of about 5mm. In other words, an image that is slightly larger than necessary in order to obviate any problem of paper positional inaccuracy during the printing process.

Alan I made a mistake. My exported png is ok, pics upto the edge as should be. Obviously it is the print side causing my problem.
Unfortunately my HP1220C seems to have no way of fitting to page.

I will try from another printer.

Dylan, does your printer support borderless printing?

on a normal desk top printer you usually can't to borderless printing. I print on a larger piece of paper and then cut it down to the appropriate size. On your image, create a feint border that is the actual size of the paper you want. arrange your images and text in that space. print on a larger piece of paper and then cut down.

i've done a lot of this ... and it usually works well. use a x-acto and straight edge.

Forgive me for asking this Dylan, but did you check your printer settings from the HP Director? I have an HP7310 and just discovered it has borderless printing capabilities. I had no idea.
