Have a look at the below You tube clip of the making of the HBO intro back in the day.

It's amazing how things have progressed since those days, but yikes the amount of work needed in creating that is mind boggling.
(check out the "computer camera software")

It took 14 hours to film 😮 , kinda like an animation render 😉

I think old school is the term im looking for.

Quite amazing to think that anyone of us could probably do something of a similar quality in half the time, though.

            Err..Not me 😒

Actually this clip was pretty enjoyable to me. ☀
Even more than a lot of movie CG at present day.
The handcraftsmanship must have been fun making it look realistic on film.

Well 3/4 guys working for 3 weeks (i think thats how long he said) so thats the equivalent of a months of solid modelling time (approx half the time they had.)

May have taken a long time to make, but I like it. There's a hand-made quality to it that I sometimes miss in CG. (I'm also a sucker for Wallace & Gromit.)

Most Film and Tv art departments were still on the board in the mid 90's.

Virtual backlots are what's happening now.
Here's a link showing some San Francisco VisFx I did for a series set in SF and shot in Vancouver called Killer Instinct...

Google Stargate if you want to see how it's done.
