I've just happened on this new app: "Photosynth". It creates "fake" 3D-ish environments from dozens"hundreds of photos or possibly from 2D SU output images?

Needs a plugin however and from the comments in this blog entry (as it is a MS lab product) it seems that they have forgotten about the fact that not everyone uses MS Windows.

Also, while I'm writing these lines, the site seems to have become unavailable... πŸ˜•

Gaieus, you are getting old. Take a look at this thread for photosynth on 'roids.

A solution like that would work famously well with SU! I shudder to thing of the amount of exported images required to be able to build a VR environment. Something like that is worth a look into and creating a plugin for SU.

Id be all for someone writing an exporter for this as well. I dont think the number of images would be too bad really, it wouldnt be much more than a short animation anyway.

Yes, it looks interest alright. If you watch the intro video
presented by the young lady you will note that plain colours
or white are NOT a good idea ..... so textures or photo textures
are the way to go πŸ‘

Just a little heads up, the sites back up, and you can create your own synths (as they call them) here: http://photosynth.net/learn.aspx

Well i had a go at it (using an SU model πŸ‘ ) and its really frustrating. You ahve to upload the whole thing to an external server, it slows the whole thing down a lot. I really hope they release a stand alone synth maker thingy, it might then join the unsurprisingly short list of good bits of windows software. I really hope microsoft doesnt screw this up.

This would be really interesting if someone could figure out how to get the point cloud data into skechup. Almost a poor mans lidar.

Seems everyone wants to use it! They would probably charge a ridiculous price for this if they sold it as a stand alone package...
