just a mock up model before i began something a bit more detailed (same version just a bit more realistic hopefully) for an observatory with visitors centre.

Its built into a mountain side bearing off a main central column forming a ventilating cowl that integrates all the services for the building

Accomodation for the guests bear off the framework that cantilevers from the mountain face, and from the cowl, with smaller pods for accomodation slotting into the framework.

The rest is all a bit sketchy- seems quite sci-fi ish at the moment but will try to clear up and make a little less rigid in the final build

      c & c welcome

If it is, keep in mind that they are evaluating for build-ability, according to the brief.

You actually don't need telescopes to see aurora, so I assume that this isn't for that competition. Aurora tend to fill a good portion of the sky, in my experience.

hi, yeah it was just for a painting i was going to do inspired from that brief (using SU to get the outline/perspective right) the telescope was just for aesthetics but yeah i think painting an aurora will be hard.... it would be a bit too unnecessary/unrealistic for this competition although i hope for the people doing the competition that the emphasis isnt to heavily reliant on buildability, the brief comes across as an ideas competition in some way even though its quite well detailed, maybe grand concepts (to me) would be where the appeal could be to all designers.

but cheers for the comments nevertheless

I cant remember where i read it (might have been in the aforementioned thread) but i think the competition is also mainly looking for innovative ideas, with buildability in there to keep the ideas realistic.

And i look forward to seeing the finished product archi.

                  Very cool model!

Large telescopes are rarely associated with buildings due to the issues of vibration that can be introduced by people walking around etc.

Similarly when you see large domed-covered telescopes, note that the telescopes typically don't extend outside of the dome as one function of the dome is to protect the telescope from the wind. Even small breezes could introduce problematic movements on a powerful telescope.

Large telescopes are also typically located away from light pollution. You'll note from looking at pics of telescope installations that they even avoid putting windows on the facilities as the light spill can illuminate local atmosphere. So having exterior public spaces in such close proximity to the telescope might not be very realistic. For safety all those public walkways would likely need some lighting.

Anyways, it looks like a fun project. Don't let my comments bum you out!

                  Regards, Ross

I'm not following the design ideas, though. Are you still working on an observatory?

                          Ant farm Archi,

That first image is so on...

I wanted to post about it yesterday, but took a tumble into a six of cans, and the rest of the story is about debauchery.

As for this being an observatory, I have my suspicions it's not. It would appear to me that your pulling a bit of a Jack bird fast one, a bit of a "oh, I'm not involved with the pending destruction of our planet," kind of a game.

This is clearly a plan, or the beginnings of a plan for an alien arrival center, one that will aid the meat puppets in there attack of our blue marble.

It's a bit battered, but the only home we have at the moment -- not like we're very focused on it's care, but children will be child like, and we are scarcely past the crotch goblin stage... in a cosmic sense that is.

So your on there side then? I can't say I blame you... We all have to make our decisions...

Perhaps your not completely set with your decision here, and would be open to the notion of setting the entire puppet plan on it's head. There are ways of messing them up, let me know if you want more information... I have some titles that might interest you.

Please add a disc for scale.

I'm familiar obviously with the project and the rules for submission, and I'm finding this hard to "read" at the size I can get it on my screen. It's difficult for me to interpret the various elements as anything conveying information about a building, as opposed to parts of a collage.

Did you actually send it in to Line of Site? Last time they did this, they literally printed the submissions out on a sheet of A4 (which is a little larger than our "letter" size in the US), and began sorting entries into the competition like that. Only those that make the first few cuts seemed to get reviewed on a monitor. (I know this because there were videos of the process available.)

hi, yep i did, it reads fine on A4 but i see wehat u mean about the monitor reading.....
theres some explaination that i have added in the description on the site but i didnt want to clog the page full of text when its supposed to be a basic concept. I don't expect it to do particularly well, the reason why its so sketchy is because i found it hard to fit in around work but will give the second brief a proper go, but im kinda content with making a nice looking image for now apologies for the lack of clarity etc...
