But I just have to ask: How does someone voluntarily relinquish a foot (the running shoe is moot, I think :`), and under what circumstances would foul play not be involved in this situation?

One of the theories I heard (which is as good as any other) was that they may be the remains of victims of an air crash that happened at sea in the area several years ago. Many of the bodies were never recovered. That might explain the running shoes...with decomposition and dismemberment on the sea bed taking its course, the bouyant shoes would rise to the surface and eventually make landfall. Apparently all the appendages had been in the water for quite some time.

That is an odd story. The fact that in most cases it's a right foot encased in a running shoe seems rather suspect.

Perhaps its something to do with pirates. They generally a pretty nasty bunch, and id imagine cutting of a foot wouldnt be beyond them. Not sure how active the area is in piracy terms though.

This gotta be foul play. I mean six feet? All wearing running shoes? Some creep's targeting joggers, imo.
I did extensive reading on serial killers, a few years back. There's some decent articles on crimelibrary.com. Not for the faint of heart!! Me, I quit reading that stuff. Far too depressing.
I know someone - an artist obsessed with these kind of evil tw*ts - who's got a John Wayne Gacy painting. No idea where he got it (or how much he coughed up for it), but I simply cannot look at that thing. I'd sleep badly having something like that in the house.

There is a phenomenon in northern Australia where rubber thongs [or as they are somtimes know,'flip-flops'] get washed up on the beaches. They are nearly always the same foot [cant remember which one].
The theory is, that because each [left and right] thong has a unique and different aerodynamic and aquadynamic shape it travels in a certain direction driven by the wind and currents.
So the left foot thongs end up in Darwin..and the right foot thongs sail on to Fiji or somewhere else.So possibly all the left feet, in this instance, have landed on some deserted beach in Greenland....or are still bobbing along on the high seas.
