I liked the projects coming from MVRDV a lot when I studied architecture in the nineties.
Nowadays, the 'stacking' stuff somewhat looks outdated and supra-modernistic to me.In that era it was 'bon-ton' to either 'fold' things (mostly floorslabs) or to 'stack' things onto eachother.
Looking back, it was just esthetic formplay.Thank God architecture evolves over time...
