3D Photography... is this the next digi camera you will buy?

Check this out... the next .jpg could have the Depth Map built-in!

Seems like a short step, IMHO, to also add an initial depth sensor that would tell the camera the exact initial distance to the subject. It already knows the FOV, etc... so it wouldn't take much, I would think, to be able to have a camera that takes a single photograph but allows you get have a 3D model instantaneously from that photograph!
That would take SketchUp's photomatch to a whole new level. Sweeeeeet.

The whole World is going 3D crazy

Building surveyors are starting to use a 3D laser scanning device to automatically create a "point cloud". The device also records the amount of light reflected back from a surface, so the results can also be viewed as a 3D greyscale photograph. The file sizes are enormous, so the measured drawings are produced from these by using a BIM package to model the spaces.

Not photography but related to the idea of gathering a 3d point cloud.
I saw a competing product on a recent episode of This Old House and it looked to me like it will be a tool for most kitchen cabinet designers/installers within a few years.
