Lifting routine

Now that I have lost 35 pounds (25+/- still to go) I want to start toning and tightening up. I have done some lifting in the past but never formed a routine.
For those of you who have experience in this area, what are some guidelines/tips on setting up a lifting routine for someone who has not done it much at all before? Also, what are the best lifts to start with etc...?

pyramid routines do well for this, and give a you a little of both.

one piece of advice, never lift alone unless you're on a nautilus or similar restrained weight system, free weights are dangerous, especially on am pyramid regime, in which by the end you won't be able to lift the weight no matter how heavy it is.
plenty of liquid and remember to give your body the amino acids it needs to fill in the rips and tears in your muscles.
