Winter Scene

Hey guys,
I find nothing harder than doing winter scenes, sooo much photoshop work to get the right look, and I haven't come close (enough) yet. tell me what you think!

over here in Alberta, Maple syrup isn't so popular! I have only eaten it off of snow once, when I visited Montreal, and I wish we carried on that tradition here!
I need this building to look like 'the place to be' during the winter, a warm and cozy social centre. Think of any image you've seen of a ski resort, with the main cabin etc

humm... I really like the falling snowflakes that you did, they look great! how did you do that? I think, however that the scene may be a little too dark... I also love the snow that you put on the ground. that looks like just a white brush with a couple effects, and the opacity turned down?

To me, Bruce's version looks like an episode of "Invasion of the Fireflies", if in fact there ever were a show called that.
I like Bruce's falling snow better but I like the original one Will posted better overall. Maybe marry the two.

The snow is much too bright and therefore emphasized in the eye of the viewer. I would try to draw more attention to the building, your main subject. When I think of the cozy chateau, I think of the glowing light from within, drawing me in to its warmth. Can you make the windows glow?

I've attempted to make the windows glow with the yellow colour, and a second layer with blurring (to simulate a radiosity effect) on top of it... I'm kind of at my wit's end as to how to make them pop more without taking them into Kerkythea... which would make the snow and trees etc even harder...

I think your first image was closer to being real.
In an urban area the ground snow and the snowing sky and clouds reflect the light equally, This is how it is so bright in/during a snowstorm. Now if you are in the country, deep forest in the pitch black of night, when it is snowing sideways and visibility is zilch, the windows will have a amber glow, and shadows will emanate from that source.
I think that light source on the left is confusing the issue.
