Base Camp 2008 !!!!!
-
Thanks Aidan.

Aidan,
Please make sure that everyone who gets an invite to Basecamp actually receives it...just recently I have begun noticing that emails with gmail.com or google.com in them in the sender category (including mine...I use gmail to send and collect my own domain's emails) are being blocked by certain common commercial Spam filters (like Barracuda). I think this has something to do with Google's CAPTCHA being publicly cracked a few weeks ago. Worse--intended recipients do not know that their Google-origin email has been blocked. (I know that we have a common friend, Diego Matho at the BAC...I work for him sometimes, and he hasn't been able to receive my emails unless I use my own mailserver without gmail routing.)

Hey guys! As Aidan implied, there was a lot of work and coordination going into the newest newsletter so it took a little longer to post than normal. But it's worth it!!! Check it out!
3D Basecamp 2008 (June 11-13) is going to be a total blast! If you look at the Event Program, I think you'll find tons of cool stuff to get involved in! Digital imagery/Photoshop techniques, Geomodeling w/SketchUp and Google Earth, creating custom Styles, Ruby-ruby-ruby, working with terrain and irregular surfaces, plus techniques for promoting you work using Google resources and tons more!!! I can't wait!
http://www.google.com/events/3dbasecamp/program.htmlI really look forward to meeting you all at the awesome Google California campus!! Maybe someone can model Stan, the full size Tyrannosaurus Rex and Google mascot!!
So, if you want to receive and invitation (and who doesn't?!), sign up here! http://services.google.com/events/3dbasecamp_2008
Again, I (and the whole SketchUp/Layout team!) am really psyched to be able to meet with you all in person! Should really be fun and we'll learn a ton of new techniques, become totally inspired to make great work, and we'll make lots of new connections with fellow Sketchers!
See ya there (I hope!)!!
Cheers,
- CraigD

I am hoping there might be some ad hoc discussion/presentations, perhaps by attendees if not the google staff.
For example, reviews of various rendering products.

If you go to the link I posted above(http://www.google.com/events/3dbasecamp/program.html), you'll see a session just for that:
Photo-Rendering Your SketchUp Models: Some Options
It's a big world of rendering options out there, and this session will attempt to provide some guidance about where to start. If you want to make your SketchUp models look more photographic, this will be the place to be.See ya there!

Sounds very interesting, Craig..!!
Now... As you may already know, I'm in the KT Team... What should I/we do if we want KT to be among the render applications presented at this Base Camp..??
Is it like a trade fair, where various companies can sign up and have a stand - or..?? -
Also, on Frederik's note; if they (as a non-commercial product) have to "compete" for participation what guarantees that there will be at least one member of the KT Team picked? I really like these guys and their enthusiasm creating this great, free software which could definitely be compatible with most top commercial renderers but I doubt that they could afford to "hire" a stand as it is generally the case with trade fairs.
(FYI - I'm not connected to Kerkythea in any other ways that their team are members here and I'm a member at their Forums )
And well, yeah, I'd really like to meet them, too - as I would many-many other members here and elsewhere... -
Well, unfortunately I can't make this one, but others on the FF team will be there. As for a trade fair, the last Basecamp was nothing like that formal. The, then smaller, group of developers were simply given a room, some power hook-ups and a few tables on which to strut their stuff on the final day, after lunch.
We were there, as was Susan for Entourage Arts, I can't remember whether the Piranesi Boys were still around at that point, but Erez Anzel was also there demonstrating SimuTerra. Sorry if I've forgotten anyone; I met a few people who were developing fledgeling support at that stage, but just can't remember if they actually had "booths" or not. I do remember we gave away our entire supply of FF baseball caps.I'd imagine some similar, but grander, arrangements might apply this time around.

Thanks, Craig for the reply.
A suggestion. There may be a presentation running concurrently with another that an attendee wants to see. Might there be a chance of it being repeated on Day 3 sometime if requested by popular demand?
In a handout, have a survey where atttendees could submit their 1st and 2nd choices for a "repeat", then collect them at the end of Day 2. The Google staff could then make a judgement for a repeat and announce/post it at Day 3's breakfast.

Thanks for the info, Alan..
However, it will still require that I'm being invited, and so far I haven't seen anything in my inbox... -
Good questions and suggestions!
I've forwarded this info/link on to those who are involved in the planning and coordination of the event, so I'll let you know what I hear.. (or they'll jump in here and elaborate if they can).
Keep the interest, questions and suggestions coming!
Cheers,

Are all materials, lectures, classes, and resources made public after Basecamp ends?
-
I remember during the last Base Camp hiding myself in a cupboard and sobbed for days because i was on the other side of the world and didn't have enough Frequent Flyer point to go..... If only ducati monster could float, Craig, I would fill the tank and start sailing!!!!
Hope those fortunate few report back as Ross M [i think] and others did following the last one....Cheers
-
I'm sure we can count on some reports back from all the attendees that frequent this place. You know they will want to 'rub it in'
Regards, Ross

I really hope that the good folks organizing this event will make a strong effort to allow virtual participation in the conference. We've started to do this fairly successfully at a conference held every year for NY independent school IT directors... with a small fraction of Google's resources. This past November we were able to audio or video record many of the sessions and make them available quickly (in some cases concurrently via streaming) over the Internet. What about doing something like TED, where all the presentations are recorded and made available for download? I think there are just loads of possibilities to use Web 2.0 tools and the Internet to make this a much richer experience for the entire SketchUp community.

Well, I just got my "Unfortunately you were not selected to attend" rejection notice. polite, but to the point.
Dangit
oh well that does it. I'm switchin' to max.
-
I got the same "unfortuantely...." notice as well. Did anyone get a congratulations notice?
-
I was one of the lucky ones ! I was invited & they give you until May 6 to respond.
-
Well congrats, I was really hoping I'd get an invite but I got the rejection letter yesterday as well . Oh well, there's always the chance that I'll be chosen in the second round after the chosen few that can't go are weeded out.
