@Solo, I'll bring along my friends:

      They look quite persuasive 😄

I did my best on re-texturing the arms as tree trunks using the 'projected' method.

        Biebel,

Although truely not the most perfect, there is a wrapping feature in texturing in SU - have a look at here (all the way to the bottom):
        http://download.sketchup.com/OnlineDoc/gsu6_win/Content/D-Modification_Tools/ModTool-PositionTexture.htm

TaffGogh has created a series of terrains with beautifully positioned images on top for instance.

          Thanks for that link Gaieus,
Are you refering to that 'wrap around corners' method or to the 'projected' method at the bottom (which I used here)?

Well, there is a wrapping around cylinder part, too but that's still for 2D curved surfaces (I mean they just curve around one axis).
Certainly a sphere works very differently.

Slightly different version (also Podium 1.5) with depth of field applied (using the d.o.f method described here on the forum).

These are fantastic Biebel, I cannot choose which I like most. The top ones make me think of a charasmatic church rival.

What would look cool is if one hand was in a fist, the individual amongst them.

                          Thanks Solo,
Indeed I would like to 'custom' build the hands (fists etc...). I am trying to learn Silo for this, as I feel Sketchup is kind of limited for it (I know it 'can' be done by guys like you 😉)...
So maybe I get back to this scene some time later.

Here's a similar shot but used Fry for it:

This is a fantastic render. Nice composition, intriguing materials, excellent lighting. Nice job!
