Hi Tom, it looks like very high quality work. Publishable quality! I'm not sure what the normal cost would be for something like this, but $25 per hour seems incredibly low...mechanics get $65 per hour...
I'm sure others will chime in on rates/cost/value, but I think this is beautiful work and should cost accordingly!

If I were you, doing that for $1000 seems about right, I would maybe charge a touch more, even...

Craig, I think he means that it took 25 hours and he charged 1000 dollars. Comes out to 40 an hour... which is a little low for this quality of work, but I would be very happy with that as a client or the renderer.

Kris, just the altered photo...the funding proposal image. I plan to throw in any rendering that may happen (though, as I thought would happen from my limited experience with law enforcement clients, the PR will probably be the one wanted according to my client...the architect).
Dave, good to see ya...yeah, for this part of the country too: technical services come pretty cheap. I'm competing part-time with the idea of hiring a full-time recent graduate (at a third the rate...even with benefits) so I have to stay cost effective. Plus, most (including me) would rather work with an excited, vision-filled, kid rather than an old fart whose experience makes him play the devil's advocate all too often :`)
My client...well, his response was: "This will work...just the one view." He's a hoot. We did talk about a couple of views when it was one existing building and one new one done in SU. Then he set the time restraint of one week and added the whole campus with another new building, so we went with the PSP only. I didn't know about the new parking lots and fence (which took a good half of the time) till after the budget had been set so low...when we were trying to pick which view (one of those "oh yeah, I forgot's" we all love to hear)!
But he'll be just fine, especially if his client is pleased...and if not I'll work with him. He deserves it bigtime. I have 3 models going for him right now and some CD's, and he keeps pushing me into (and paying for) solutions like this one that I might not have discovered I can do and may well use again to my advantage...I hope!

for what you're offering your client Tom, 1000 seems to be a steal. we normally charge $1.00 per square foot. but thats for the whole 9, we don't do many renderings only.
but I think your price may be a little low since it's such a visual aid. and your architect is making anywhere from 2.5% to 6% of the project.

that is a tough issue,after twenty
years of work and so many new skils
adopted I still make mistakes in
Judging how much someone is willing
to pay. You win some and You loose
some.Start with 700$ say and if the
market expands and interest grows
raise the price for future clients. -
25 hours in photoshop is a long time, but for how seamless that image is, I would say it was well spent! I could see some PS guru's toning that down to maybe 15, but those are the guys that are absolute pros... I would consider myself an average to above average PS user, and I think that would take me around 25 hours to do

Thanks for your candor...just about what I was thinking (and considering I don't get what the guru's get, still a bargin, huh?) Anyway, I did learn a lot...and in the long run that's the most important.

Will- thanks for making me feel better- it's so seamless, I was baffled at first as well!
Tom- I'm just dipping my toes in the market, but your price seems extremely fair. I guess the better question is, how did the client respond to the work and the price?
