Philip Johnson's Glass House - Pictures

Photos of the glass house and grounds. I was lucky enough to be part of a preview tour (that allowed photography) the week before it opened to the public (hence the giant tent on the grounds). Just getting around to putting them online, so enjoy! Feel free to PM me with questions, we got to spend several hours walking the grounds and inspecting the structures!

Great pics shoreline99. I recently saw a documentary on the Farnsworth House. The Glass House is another" house I wouldn't live in, but love to look at" piece of modern history.
p.s. As a final touch, put some Crocs on Phil in the lawnmower shot. Some nice yellow ones would be good.

Beautiful pics of a beautiful building, thanks for posting. Although architects often compare the Glass House and the Farnsworth House (and argue about who influenced who) it always struck me how different they are- the only thing they really have in common are glass walls, solid service cores and flat roofs. They have completely different relationships with their sites, the ground plane, approach, plans, massing, materials and colours. I've never seen either- I'd love to see them in the flesh!
I notice on one of the pics that the plaster ceiling has been repaired and skimmed (very messily). I presume it has just undergone restoration, but surely they were going to repaint the ceiling before public viewing? Did they mention that? Perhaps it's not visible under normal cicumstances, but your flash makes it very noticable. Also, do you know if the Barcelona chairs are original, i.e. specified by Johnson or a later addition?

The building is basically untouched since PJ's passing, but that did appear to be a hasty patch job on the ceiling to fix water damage and was mentioned while we were there. The furnishings in the house were as they were when he lived there.
The farnsworth house was brought up during lunch (did i mention we had lunch there on the grounds?
), and much was made of them both landmark modernist buildings and being under care of the Preservation Trust. It will be interesting to see how the buildings age. -
Thanks for the info, I wouldn't have thought Phillip Johnson would've chosen Mies chairs, but I was wrong!
