I ordered a new laptop, and spec'd Vista basic. I was thinking about
uninstalling it and putting a copy of XP as the os instead.
Now I'm being told don't do that.
Here's that question, how screwed I'm I with running Vista basic as opposed to any of the other versions.
Assuming that I will have to face an upgrade, what does anybody recommend.

TRS, there is a thread I started a while back. I don't have Vista so I cannot personally help you but you might get some info from here:

I just did exactly what you've described.

My laptop came with Vista, and immediately I uninstalled it. Threw XP Pro on to it (a little bit of work to find the right drivers, but well worth it) and its worked great ever since! no need for vista until a couple of years down the road, I think anyways.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't uninstall Vista in favour of XP Pro. Vista is nothing more than eye-candy (has some advanced features as well, 99% of which you don't need right now) and trouble thus far, I'll only upgrade once the OS has matured some and I have to.

Dell are now offering their new laptops with either XP or Vista due to consumer demand. 😉
