India's Tata Motors has unveiled the world's cheapest car.
It has a Β£1,250 price tag that suddenly brings ownership into the reach of tens of millions across the world.
While the price has created a buzz, critics say the Tata Nano will lead to millions more cars hitting already clogged Indian roads, adding to mounting air and noise pollution problems.
Others have said Tata will have to sacrifice quality and safety standards to meet the target price.
But company chairman Ratan Tata said the car would be the least polluting car on Indian roads.
He said it would meet necessary safety standards.
"I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby," he said.
"It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal.
"Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions.
"We are happy to present the People's Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility." -
if all works well and is well received by the public.. then this thing is gonna rock.. wonder how it would work on indian roads though.. we are famous for pot holes!!
one of the major advantage would be the ease of parking.... -
Looks like the peeps at FormFonts designed it.
Pro: this will bring private transportation within the reach of many. Con: when everyone's got a car, the environment will be going down the drain at an even faster rate.

So should only the rich have the right to pollute the environment?
Actually I don't own a car either... True I don't even need it.
-
But the sun has just risen on the Indian auto insurance industry...good times are here.

You know what I meant.

Yes I know. I'm just in the teasing mood...

Progress would be if people traded in their two-ton seven-passenger off-road vehicles which they use to commute by themselves on city streets.
-
Ah yeah, I know that kind...
-
Hmm. We all do.
Real progress, I suspect, will be made when we finally run out of oil. We'll have no choice but to come up with an alternative.
-
I await the day we find a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative solution that totally destroys the oil industry to the point that the oil rigs in the gulf get sold as real estate to the eccentric and reclusively rich....now thats progress.
-
I second that. And I'd like to be rich enough to buy one of those rigs, so I'd have a hideout where I could work on my formidable Stink Ray Cannon. Muhahaha!
My apologies. Just finished a project at work. Bored out of my mind now.
But yeah ... away with oil. Would be good for peace too.

Ugly car, Mateo. But a very cool concept.
-
I agree Stinkie that is the bad side of it but eventually
they will probably develop better looking models. -
Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.
Personally I think the Volkswagen Micro Bus is the coolest vehicle on the planet.

Isn't it a coincidence that we have two concurrent car topics which have something else in common? TATA Motors. The same company which have just launched "the world's cheapest car" is also financing the R&D of the MDI Air Car (see 'the world's cleanest car' topic).
