Stu, I'm just using 6 like an "add-on" (for the foreseeable future, it seems, from tech "is this on the list" replies I've received) ...photomatch, 3d text, image color picker, etc. There will probably be more as I get time to learn more of what's there (not as fast when you don't use the program all the time like gobbling up 5 after it was released. Tom.

        Stu,

Though surely not as a button in the toolbar (and you probably know of this) but in View -> Rendering menu, there is a "Monochrome" option in SU 5, too.
I still use v5 for some ruby plugins that don't work (or at least didn't when v6 was released) like for Didier's cloud.rb (to tell the truth I haven't tried for about 3 months now).
Otherwise I use v6 (plus as I'm so "misorganized", I could never tell what was created in v5 and what in v6 and that would make my life really painful). Maybe some day I should "clean up" may hard drive and organitze things properly?!

I am still on v5 for various reasons. 3D modelling comprises just a small part in our office work. So even though v6 is installed in our workstations, it's hardly used. Since I don't model much these I also don't get much time to familiarise myself with the workings of the new features. And if I don't learn the others don't, because they learn from me. I would love to tryout photomatch someday.

Moreover, reading about the reported problems/bugs with v6 is also putting me off from adopting v6.

I still use V5 often, I "try" to use V6 to start learning all the cool new stuff. But since V6 crashes a lot, I usually switch to V5 as soon as I see things start to crash or lock up.

Im not having too much trouble with v6, although it does seem to crash more often, and the new styles panel makes me irritable.
But I am finding photomatch incredibly useful.
Now that Ive got the hang of it (and thats mostly about taking the right photos from the right angle),I can do a pretty accurate model from the photo without all the usual on-site measuring. It is saving me heaps of time.

                I guess I'm a Luddite. I'm still using 4.0.

                I did d/l 6.0 yesterday, I'll poke around in it a bit when I get time. 😉

I, too, seem to start my new projects in 6 and then migrate (hehe) into 5 at some time or another. My huge issue with 6 is that the animation export does not work at all. There is a weird z-fighting issue that promotes horrible flashing and flickering if you have two surfaces that are close to each other (a blue skin for a lake picture, a driveway on a topography that I need independent, etc.) CraigD has been working with me on and off for months on this issue and I guess they are having a heck of a time resolving the issue.

Another export issue is that 5's default aspect ratio is 4:3 and 6's is 16:9. So if you set up all your scenes in 6 and then save as 5 to get a good animation, every view is different from what you originally set up. This has cost me days in tweaking setups.

6 orbits significantly better on the Intel Mac than 5, so I will use 6 on the bigger models to model some things.

I am probably one of the minority, but I have found the whole Styles thing to be overblown, less than intuitive, and really 90% wasted on me. It would be great if they had a slimmed down 6 that we could use that didn't have all these "cute" features that I can do in photoshop better and with more adjustability. A great feature would be a global texture opacity slider, so you can moderate the overall look of a model, too.

Overall, I have found the 6 release to be fairly disappointing. I am not convinced about the direction SU is heading and I shudder to think that 5 may be my default version from here on out. I hope I am wrong........

And what about Layout? Also quite disappointing, IMHO.

                  Cheers, Chuck

                    Chuck,

as far as my SU 6 goes, in the animation options menu you can choose 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio (see image) what's more, you can have custom aspect ratio, as well.!

I have another problem though: I cannot change the codec - it's "stuck" at "full frames" and whenever I try to change it, the program crashes even without a bugsplat. Well, that's life (it may have something to do with my installed codec packs but I'll wait until a major maintenance of my PC).

I agree with the styles - I looked into them but practically never really used any other than the default one. Others certainly may be happy with them. I don't even use PhotoMatch and very rarely use LayOut.

As for a "version 7 wishlist", someone has already started a topic like that. I'd have some things to add there as well...

Unfortunately, that option to change aspect ration is windows only.

Why on earth they would have any options that are platform specific is beyond me.

You can't change the codec!! Yikes, that is a major deal breaker, too. What is unbelievable to me is that the exports work great in 5 and they have managed to ruin an essential functionality in the "upgrade"

If I had paid for 6, boy would I be upset; as it is, I am just disappointed and losing confidence for the future direction of SU.

                      Cheers, Chuck

Well, I didn't know about that MAC stuff. Maybe the mov format is what it is all about.
I'm still lucky with this codec type - I can compress (and even sort of anti-alias) the mpg files it producec in other applications. Imagine I get stuck with a lousy codec! (Actually it used to work - it just happened not to some time, maybe after the first maintenance release?)

I use the H.264 codec almost exclusively. Excellent quality with decent file sizes, though a highly textured 364 acre development, 1024 x 768, 8 minutes long is 2.4 Gigs. And that is with 2D trees (2000 of them)

                          Cheers, Chuck
