Art Terminology in Modeling
-
For the artistic types out there... when creating a model for presentation, do you think in terms of art terminology - such as color, composition, balance, etc? Or do you just "know" when you've got it right?

When I'm setting a 'scene' that I'll be exporting as an image I am generally thinking of it in those 'art' terms, coupled with thoughts about what I need to communicate. When I'm modelling I'm almost always in a design development mode where my mindset isn't on presentation but focused on creation. In modelling I find I can move right inside the virtual 3d world, exploring and developing just as if my mind and body are right in there with the model. So for me the act of modelling using SketchUp is experiential. When I'm modelling I don't put much thought into how I will present it as I know that part will generally take care of itself once the modelling is done. If when I'm modelling I notice some particular view of the model is interesting in terms of composition, massing, colour etc. then I will create a scene so I don't loose that insite.

I am not an artist at all... but just want to agree with Ross. It's nearly the same with me with the design process... When working on it I tend to "live" in that model with all my senses... During that stage I am usually not interested in specific presentation aspects at all. I can put myself in any corner of the model in my mind and simply "know" how a view from there will act with regard to masses, dimensions etc...
When finished modeling I take a deeper look in those corners and start to experiment with light and shadow, varying colors, maybe placing some additional interior or exterior objects and so on to get a result I like in view of atmosphere and composition...

When modeling, it is usually at the design development phase (of architecture) and although i may not think in those specific terms, the thought process is there: is the building's composition of elements in balance, are the materials (colors) used appropriately. When setting up a scene for exporting an image, I follow the same guidelines of composition I learned when everything was done by hand.
